Another big squad for the seconds, 20 players turning out for the game. The team though looked a lot more solid with the inclusion of Paul Bown and Steve Mooney in defence. In midfield 3 new freshers from the University took the opportunity to get some game time, and all look as if they have a bright future in the game, good ground work, plenty of energy and a willingness to learn. The worry from the bench was the organisational side of things, big squads are hard to manage at the best of times, never mind with such an inexperienced squad, dividing the three midfield slots into their own lines seemed to be the answer, everybody knew what their job was and the confusion factor was reduced considerably.
The game itself ebbed and flowed, Bristol attacked for long periods, lacking penetration, mainly due to the fact that this defensive unit might well be the strongest in the division, Captains man of the match goes to Brian Atkins in goal, who shows lacrosse maturity beyond his half dozen games; close behind him was Edd Perry, excellent defending, great clearing, resulting in a long stick goal and a couple of good assists.
At Midfield all the face of crew gave as good as they got, James Louca proving a real force, and Tom Lane is starting to grow into a solid midfielder, now he’s using both hands on the ground ball, Rhys Morgan wins the majority, and Sam King uses his quick reactions to good effect.
Up front, Lloyd Butler combined well with Luke “Fluffy” Wilmot, capping a good afternoon with a peach of a shot right into the top right hand corner of the goal. Old hands Tom Jacques, Colin Carey and Nik Roberts adding some stability to what was at times a frantic game.
This is the first win for the “new look” second team, let’s hope it’s just the beginning.
